PFA Educational Programs
Currently, the Educational Support Committee offers the following programs:
PSAT Prep is offered in the early fall, prior to the October PSAT date, after school hours. Taught by Princeton Review, the PSAT Prep program is aimed at familiarizing students with the format and content matter of the PSAT. It is recommended for sophomores and juniors.
PSAT and SAT Practice Tests are offered each fall. They are administered and scored by Princeton Review. These tests are open to all HTHS students for a minimal fee.
An ACT Practice Test is a new addition to the suite of practice tests being offered. It is also administered in the fall and is available to HTHS students for a nominal charge.
Driver's Education is offered after school hours and provides students with the 30-hour in-class component of standard high school drivers’ education classes. The course is taught by a certified teacher (certified by both the NJ State Department of Education and the NJ Department of Motor Vehicles). This course is recommended for students 16 years and older. The fee for the program is payable directly to the instructor and covers the cost of teacher and materials.
Career Day takes place in the spring and is open to all freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Professionals from the fields of engineering, architecture, law, computer science, the arts, medicine, science, aviation and public service are invited to come to speak to the students about their careers. This is traditionally held the first Friday in May.
Research Grants are available to students for their sophomore research projects. Students do a formal application and up to $50 may be awarded per project.
Global Enrichment Committee provides PFA funds to supplement the arts and humanities program at HTHS. Support for field trips, Shakespeare presentations, etc is requested from this committee and supported based on the number of students served, relevance to the curriculum, etc as judged by the committee.
Research Showcase is an event coordinated between the PFA and the faculty to give parents an opportunity to view the research conducted by HTHS students and to share in the students' achievements. This is an evening event held in the early spring after the major research competitions have completed. Students display their projects much like they do at competitions. Selected students may also formally present their projects to the attendees.
