Chess Team Wins the Stockton University High School Chess Tournament For The 2nd Year In A Row
The HTHS Chess Team participated in the 2nd annual Stockton University High School Chess Tournament on 2/23/19. The tournament provides an opportunity for teams from the Shore HS Chess League to play teams from the South Jersey Chess League.
The Varsity team was represented by Jason Yan, Abhinav Ramidi, Pranav Gaka, Mayank Barad and Hazem Zaky. JV players Andy Zhang and Ben Shain were also able to participate.
The varsity team finished the tournament in a tie with Jackson HS for 1st Place!! The tiebreaker was a 5 vs 5 blitz match where each player gets 5 mins on their clock. High Tech pulled out a 4 to 1 win in the blitz match to win the tournament for the 2nd year in a row!

Academic Team Wins The East Brunswick FunFest Quiz Bowl
On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Academic Team sent 4 teams to East Brunswick to compete in their annual FunFest Quiz Bowl.
Against a field of 30 teams, High Tech repeated as champions of the FunFest Quiz Bowl, won by the C-Team, composed of Frank Grabowski, Selena Liu, Brian Liu, and Deepak Gopalakrishnan. The B-Team composed of Michael Li, Adrian Thamburaj, Eric Zheng, and Cole Snedeker, finished in 4th place. The A-Team composed of Steven Liu, Ivy Wang, Anna Cai, and Max Brodsky came in 5th place. The D-Team composed of 4 freshmen, Shashwat Tewari, Emily Luo, Sidharth Srivastava, and Robert Kang, finished with a 5 & 4 record, ranked in 15th place in a field of 30 teams. In addition, Steven Liu won a book prize for achieving the 4th highest individual score. Another outstanding performance by all.

The Chess Team Finished in 1st Place in its Last Two Tournaments
Congratulations to the varsity Chess Team for earning first place in the two recent tournaments sponsored by the Shore High School Chess League. Below are the details and a picture from each event.
TOMS RIVER ELKS TOURNAMENT
The team won the annual Toms River Elks Chess Tournament held on Sunday 1/20. They entered the 4 round competition as the 3rd seed and defeated both the 2nd seed and 1st seed teams in the final 2 rounds enroute to the title. The team was lead by tournament MVP Jason Yan. The other players on the varsity team were: Andrew Mascillaro, Abhinav Ramidi, Aditya Baireddy and Varun Tupuri.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, 2/2, they defeated St Joseph high school in the championship match of the annual Knights of Columbus Tournament to become the champions of the 2019 Knights of Columbus Tournament. This is the record breaking 5th consecutive year that High Tech has won the tournament!! The Varsity Team finished the day with a record of 4 and 0. They won an impressive 17 games out of 20. The varsity team consisted of Jason Yan, Andrew Mascillaro, Eric Chai, Abhinav Ramidi and Aditya Baireddy. Jason Yan was named the tournament MVP.
The High Tech Academic Team Finishes in 2nd Place at the State Championship
The Academic Team sent 3 teams to the New Jersey State Championship History Bee and Bowl at Ridgewood HS on Jan 19, 2019, with a field of 85 teams.
The A Team qualified for the Championship match but lost to Hunter College High School of NYC, to finish in second place. The B Team finished as quarter-finalists. The C Team qualified for the top 16 playoffs.

Sophomore Brian Liu is Runner Up In International Math Championship
HIGH TECH STUDENT IS RUNNER-UP IN INTERNATIONAL MATH CHAMPIONSHIP
Providence, RI—Brian Liu, a sophomore at High Technology High School in Lincroft, finished second and won $6,000 in the 2019 Who Wants to Be a Mathematician Championship, Saturday, January 19 at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore. This is the second year in a row that Brian finished as the runner-up.
Info about Brian:
· He earned a perfect score on the American Mathematics Competitions 10 exam, the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, and the USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad, and has qualified twice for the Mathematics Olympiad Program.
· Brian won the "Funniest Halloween Costume" at High Technology last year.
Of the $6,000 total, $3,000 will go to Brian and $3,000 to the math department at High Technology High School.
Who Wants to Be a Mathematician was part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings held in Baltimore January 16-19. Over 5,000 mathematicians attended the meeting. This is the tenth championship contest of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. The American Mathematical Society (AMS) organizes the championship game and regional games in different cities nationwide to reward good mathematics students.
Brian finished in second place among 12 semifinalists from the US, Canada, and the UK, who were selected from more than 5,000 students based on their scores on a qualifying test administered by the game's technology sponsor, DigitalEd, using its online testing and assessment tool, Möbius.

Junior Laura Futamura To Appear On NPR's From The Top Program

17-year-old flutist Laura Futamura from Middletown, New Jersey will appear on an upcoming episode of From the Top, the hit NPR radio program featuring America’s best young classical musicians. The show will air on WQXR 105.9 FM Saturday January 5 at 6 AM and by podcast at fromthetop.org beginning December 31. The broadcast features performances and interviews with outstanding young musicians and Guest Host Molly Yeh and Co-Host/Pianist Peter Dugan and was taped before a live audience at the University of Connecticut’s Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts this fall.
Laura is a junior at High Technology High School in Lincroft, New Jersey and studies with Carol Wincenc at The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division. She was the winner of “Best Performance of a Newly Commissioned Piece” award (for the piece she plays on From the Top) and second place overall at the 2018 National Flute Association High School Soloist competition, a 2018 and 2019 HM winner of the National Young Arts Foundation, and participated in Carnegie Hall’s 2018 National Youth Orchestra 2. Laura is a member of her school’s VEX robotics team (first place winners at the National Technology Student Association Conference in VEX Robotics Skills), a teaching assistant for a middle school robotics and coding program, and a volunteer for the Superior Court of New Jersey’s Juvenile Conference Committee. She also enjoys painting, reading novels and fashion.
On the broadcast, Laura performs Fanmi Imèn, Poem for Flute and Piano by Valerie Coleman with Peter Dugan, piano. Her performance is part of From the Top’s New Music Series.

Academic Team Collects Serious Hardware at the History Bee & Bowl Competition
On Oct. 27, in a heavy wind storm, the Academic Team sent 2 teams to the Northern Jersey History Bee & History Bowl Competition at Seton Hall University.

Both the A-Team and B-Team were undefeated until they met in the Semi-finals match. The A-Team advanced to the finals but lost the championship to Millburn H.S. in a close match. The A-Team received a plaque for second place and the B-Team received a plaque for third place.
In the individual Varsity History Bee, Cole Snedeker won the Silver Medal for second place, while Darren Petrosino placed 4th, Steven Liu placed 6th, Karen Li placed 7th, and Frank Grabowski placed 8th, All five students qualified to compete in the National History Bee in April.
In the individual JV History Bee, Deepak Gopalakrishnan won the Gold medal for first place, Alex Wu won the Bronze Medal for third place, while Sam Hampel placed 4th, and all qualified for the Nationals.
In the US Geography Olympiad National Qualifying Exam, Deepak Gopalakrishnan placed second and Cole Snedeker placed 5th, both qualifying for the Nationals.
In the US History Bee National Qualifying Exam, Alex Wu come in first place in the JV division and Karen Li come in 7th place in the Varsity Division, both qualifying for the Nationals.

Snacks With Scientists - Recap and Pictures
Snacks With Scientists is an initiative started four years ago by senior girls from High Tech who wanted to provide an event for young girls where they could learn about career opportunities in STEM fields and meet and interact with females currently working in those fields. The event specifically targets girls in the fifth and sixth grade. This year marks the fourth annual Snacks With Scientists event.
Over 100 girls attended this years event. Sixteen different professionals volunteered their time to come and talk about their careers and interact with the girls. The event is sponsored by the National Honor Society and the Steminist club. Thank you to Ms. Gross, the advisor for both clubs and all the students who helped make this year’s event a success. Thank you also to Delicious Orchards for donating snacks.

Academic Team Places First at Rutgers' Scarlet Knight Invitation Tournament
In the first academic quiz bowl tournament of the year, the Rutgers University Scarlet Knight Invitation Tournament, our B-Team won first place, beating East Brunswick, 470 to 230, in the Championship match and qualified for the national championship tournament in Atlanta over the Memorial Day weekend. Our A-Team beat Millburn to win third place. Our C-Team was undefeated in the Novice bracket.
In the individual book awards for the highest individual scores, Steven Liu placed second in the competitive division while Alex Wu and Brian Liu placed 3rd and 4th in the Novice division.

All works are assessed by a panel of judges made up of luminaries in creative fields. Past Scholastic Art & Writing winners include Ken Burns, Stephen King, and Sylvia Plath.
Senior Eileen Huang was also awarded an American Voices Medal. The American Voices Medal for writers is the highest regional honor presented by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. A single artist from each region is presented with this award each year.
All Gold Medal winners will be honored at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall later this year. Congratulations to all!

Chess Team Wins Inaugural Stockton University Chess Tournament
On Saturday, January 20, the HTHS Chess Team participated in the inaugural Stockton University High School Chess Tournament over the weekend. The tournament has been created to provide an opportunity for teams from the Shore HS Chess League to play teams from the South Jersey Chess League.
The Varsity team was represented by Kevin Yan, Allen Zhang, Andrew Mascillaro, Aryan Shah and Caleb Lunsford. JV players Aditya Baireddy and Arsh Singhal were also able to participate.
The varsity team finished the tournament with a record of 4 – 0 to win the tournament!! Each varsity player won all of their games. Aditya and Arsh played as part of a mixed team. Aditya won 2 games and Arsh won 3 games.

Selena LiuIn the team History Bowl competition, the High Tech Varsity A team was undefeated to win the State Championship. The Varsity B team advanced to the Quarter-finals. In the JV division, our JV team won all their matches except for the final championship match against Ridgewood. The JV team fought valiantly by taking the last 5 questions but just missed winning the championship plaque, finishing in second place.
In the individual Varsity History Bee competition, Doug Simons won the [second place] Silver Medal. Steven Liu and Cole Snedeker were also among the 10 varsity Bee finalists. There were also 3 High Tech students among the 10 JV Bee finalists: Frank Grabowski, Deepak Gopalakrishnan, and Karen Li. Karen was the only female among the 20 Bee finalists. Deepak and Karen were in a 3-way tie for the Bronze Medal [JV Bee], but lost in a single sudden death question.
Sophomore Karen Li distinguished herself by winning the first place medal in the US History contest, JV division and an invitation to compete in the National US History contest in Washington DC in April.
Freshman Deepak Gopalakrishnan competed in US Geography Olympiad, JV Division, and just missed by one question from a perfect score. Deepak won the first place JV medal, and a Book Prize for the top Geography score, by also beating all those in the Varsity division, and received an invitations to compete in the National Geography Bee in Washington DC in April and the International Geography Bee in Berlin, Germany, in July.
